Redskins: Mike Shanahan was a willing, positive job reference for Robert Griffin III

Former Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said nice things about Robert Griffin III to Rams head coach Jeff Fisher who passed it along to RGIII who then called Shanahan to thank him for saying nice things about him.

This blows me away!

Coach Shanahan told this story to ESPN 980 “Redskins Radio” earlier today.

No team called Shanahan to ask about Griffin after Griffin’s release. That surprised him.

While speaking to Fisher on another matter, Shanahan says he mentioned that he heard talk about RG in connection to the Jets and Broncos “…and I said, ‘Hey. I know there’s a lot of things out there that come across negative, especially with my name on it, and I’d just like to tell you how I feel about them.’”

Griffin has a shot to be successful, says Shanahan, if he goes back to some things he did as a rookie.

Griffin’s camp targeted the Rams and other teams once the Redskins released him. Hog Heaven was never convinced the interest was mutual, but we surmised that Griffin’s people reached out tot the Rams. Somewhere in the conversation, Shanny’s words got back to Griffin who then reached out to his former coach.

The ESPN 980  story is, Robert Griffin III called Mike Shanahan III before signing with the Browns. It includes links to the audio of Shanahan’s interview.

Hog Heaven is … well-seasoned. We’ve learned that media stories are about 80 percent accurate. We do not know the true relationship between Griffin and his coaches, but you can bet that the national media, and Griffin’s diehard fans, made way too much of his issues. Griffin made that easy, of course.

We do wish Griffin well just because of that amazing 2012 thrill ride. And no, I do not fear competing against him when he returns to FedEx Field with the Browns this season. Neither should you be.

That’s neither hate nor disrespect. It’s not personal. It’s sports.
