The Washington Redskins released running back Larry Johnson this afternoon, according to a story by Jason LaCanfora on NFL.com and Gary Fitzgerald’s story on Redskins.com.
Both report that the team made the move to make room for someone else in advance of the Rams game this Sunday. Could that someone be a former Ram?
St. Louis waived three-year veteran wide receiver Keenan Burton (6-0, 206#, Kentucky) this month and cut rookie quarterback Thaddeus Lewis over the weekend. Wide receiver is a never-ending search for the Redskins and QB Lewis may share something about the Rams playbook.
I’m just guessing, but signing either of these players shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Or maybe, just maybe, Vincent Jackson will show up tomorrow.
Johnson may be back on the roster at some point, but I have a gut feeling that Mike Shanahan sees something in rookie running back Keiland Williams. With or without Williams, depth at running back becomes an issue for Washington.
UPDATE: A tweet by Pro Football Talk says the Redskins signed RB Chad Simpson, a 2008 un-drafted free agent signed by the Colts out of Morgan State who was cut in April. Simpson was signed by the Buffalo Bills this spring and released earlier this month. See his NFL Scouting Combine summary here.
