Redskins: The Barry-Go-Round Defense

merry-go-round

In the following AP quote, who is the common thread between the two worst 3rd down defenses of the last 15 years?

“No team in the NFL is worse on third down than the Redskins, who are allowing conversions 48 percent of the time. They’re on pace to have the second-worst third-down defense in the past 15 seasons behind only the 2011 San Diego Chargers.”

The answer is defensive coordinator Joe Barry.  Not sure how his 2008 0-16 Lions did on third down, but I would guess they didn’t even hold offenses past 2nd down to even get to a lot of third downs.

The same article quotes Josh Norman as saying:

“As guys playing the ballgame, we’ve got to make it happen regardless of what coaches call.”

In other words, Norman is inferring the defensive coaching plays have been bad but as good players they should still make up for it.
