The Redskins likely will get to see if Kirk Cousins can do for a full season what he did in the second half of the 2015 season.
Washington placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Cousins, according to Pro Football Talk.
Cousins threw 19 touchdown passes and two interceptions in the final eight games of the 2015 season. The Redskins went 6-2 during that stretch, including wins in their last four games, and won the NFC East.
If Kirk Cousins plays on the franchise tag this season, he’ll have the highest base salary for any QB in the NFL in 2016: $19.953M.

Kirk Cousins, a QB with 0 career wins against winning teams, will make $20 million to play football in 2016.
What a time to be alive.

Because it’s the non-exclusive version of the franchise tag, Cousins could negotiate with other teams. But if another team signs him, it would have to fork over two first-round draft picks as compensation.
Cousins and the Redskins have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal. If a deal doesn’t get done, Cousins will make $19.953 for a long-term contract audition in 2016.
