Ah, opening night. We did it hockey fans, we’ve made it to October, we’ve survived the damn World Cup of Hockey and we’re here! We were treated to quite the display from Auston Matthews in the opener, and that is a strong understatement. He became the first player EVER to score 4 goals in his NHL debut. The fact that he did this and plays in Toronto means, at least to me, that he is forever doomed. It can only go downhill from here.
There were 4 games scheduled for tonight, with 2 games in the States, and 2 in Canada. The western games, a battle of California between the Kings and Sharks, as well as the Battle of Alberta, the opener for Rogers Place in Edmonton. The St. Louis Blues were the most convincing opening night winners, dominating Chicago in a 5-2 win. As for Toronto, well, Matthews should get used to this. He scored the only 4 goals for his team, and they were beaten by Ottawa.
Much of the rest of the league starts their season tomorrow night. Pity the Flyers, though. They don’t start until Friday, and even then, the game is a late night west coast affair, that starts at 10 local time. Their first three games are out west, and a lot of young Flyers fans might not even see their team in 2016 until the 20th. Unless you live in Philadelphia, enjoy the rest of the week and the relaunch of the hockey season.
