Aaron Gray is leaving the Sacramento Kings. According to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports, the 29-year-old center has verbally agreed to a multi-year deal with the Detroit Pistons.
Gray arrived in Sacramento last December as part of the blockbuster deal with the Toronto Raptors for Rudy Gay. The 7-foot big man gave the Kings much-needed size in the middle, but he played sparingly during his brief stint in the capital city. Gray appeared in 33 games and averaged 1.3 points and 3.1 rebounds in 10.2 minutes per contest.
Gray became a free agent after a two-year, $5.2-million contract he originally signed with the Raptors expired this summer. The terms of his new contract with the Pistons have not been disclosed.
The 29-year-old center isn’t the only player with ties to the Kings that the Pistons were courting. Detroit was in the running for Isaiah Thomas. Sam Amick of USA Today Sports reports that the Pistons are not considering signing Thomas. The 25-year-old point guard has not yet made a decision on his future and is also weighing opportunities with the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks.
Kings add size to summer league roster
The Kings decided to drop a guard and add some size to their summer league roster. They announced yesterday that they’ve added forward Alex Stepheson to take the place of guard Rion Brown on their summer league team.
The 6-foot-10 forward played his college ball at USC then went undrafted in the 2011 NBA Draft. Since leaving college, the 26-year-old big man has spent the last two years of his professional career playing overseas.
The Kings are currently holding mini-camp in Las Vegas ahead of beginning summer league action later this week. They play their first game against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday at 7 pm in Cox Pavilion.
