There appears to be a sizable market forming for quarterback Robert Griffin III, even as the Washington Redskins desperately attempt to trade the former Offensive Rookie of the Year.
According to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, “at least 10 teams” are giving Griffin a “hard look,” with the Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans as the franchises most likely to land the 26-year-old quarterback.
The Redskins have until next week to trade or release Griffin, who will count over $16 million on the team’s cap if he remains on the roster on March 9. The expectation is that Washington will cut the former No. 2 overall pick, but if market is this large, it becomes possible at least one team will be willing to use a late-round draft choice to acquire Griffin before he becomes a free agent.
As a rookie in 2012, Griffin threw 20 touchdowns and finished with a passer rating of 102.4. He’s battled major injury and fallouts with a pair of coaching staffs in the three seasons since.
Freeman reports teams believe they “remake” and “transform” Griffin in a new environment. His second chance is coming, especially within a league continuously lacking a supply of quarterbacks.
A number of teams are in the market for either a starting upgrade or a capable backup quarterback.
Griffin is reported to be targeting Houston as a potential long-term destination. Both the Rams and Browns need a future at the quarterback position, while the Dallas Cowboys lead a group of teams that could view Griffin as a strong No. 2 option behind an established starter.
A fresh start is on the horizon for Griffin, who may be looking at a robust market once he’s released by the Redskins in the coming days.
