We finally have another update on the Jaden Schwartz contract situation. Pierre LeBrun commented on the situation in a recent blog, highlighting the fact that the Blues and Schwartz are closing the gap but the two sides remain divided.
From LeBrun:
Blues RFA forward Jaden Schwartz, 22, continues to wait things out. I’m surprised this one has lasted as long as it has. It never felt like both sides were that far apart, but as of Tuesday still no deal. Word is the Blues improved their offer to north of $2 million last week. My guess is Newport Sports (Wade Arnott), which represents Schwartz, would prefer somewhere north of $2.5 million, so both sides are still in the ballpark of half a million apart per season on a two-year bridge deal. It doesn’t seem like much, but it remains an important gap.
It’s encouraging to hear that the two sides are nearing an agreement, but it’s kind of puzzling why the two parties are basically splitting hairs. In the big scheme of things in the world of hockey, $500,000 isn’t that big of a gap. However, the Blues are a squad pushing near the salary cap and every bit matters. Meanwhile, Schwartz is potentially tarnishing his image over a sum that may not be worth the future consequences.
I still believe a deal will get done, but hopefully the Blues don’t have to go too far out on a limb to get Schwartz signed.
