Report: Blues previously pursued Thomas Vanek, may again

Here's an interesting trade report which actually doesn't involve Ryan Miller. An article from Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca mentions that the St. Louis Blues were interested in Thomas Vanek back in October. Obviously Vanek ultimately landed with the New York Islanders in a trade which sent Matt Moulson and two picks to Buffalo.

The trade didn't make much sense at the time and now there are rumors surrounding Vanek's future with Isles. Would the Blues still be interested in his services? Possibly, according to Friedman.

"As for Vanek, the St. Louis Blues were in on him back in October. I can't see why that wouldn't be the case again."

Interesting. Friedman's comment is pure speculation, but it's still pretty noteworthy if you weren't aware the Blues were interested in Vanek back in October.

However, the situation in St. Louis has changed quite a bit since October. The Derek Roy signing has worked out better than any of us could have hoped, Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz have taken huge strides and the Blues are seeing big offensive numbers from just about everyone on the roster.

Would Vanek still make sense? Maybe. There are still some holes on the roster. The streaky Chris Stewart comes to mind, but it all comes down to cost. It's unclear what the Islanders would want for Vanek and it's unclear if the Blues could afford him considering they're have two goaltenders heading to free agency after 2013-14.

You're not returned to your previously scheduled Ryan Miller debates…
