When LSU saw John Chavis leave the Tigers to take on the role of defensive coordinator at Texas A&M, a high-profile vacancy opened up at the SEC program in Baton Rouge. A former SEC defensive coordinator has now been connected as a possible target; Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop.
Shoop, who left Vanderbilt for Penn State when James Franklin was hired by the Nittany Lions, will interview “soon” for the job at LSU according to a report published by The Advocate, citing an anonymous source close to the coaching search. The report goes on to suggest Shoop has some enthusiasm about the possibility of a return to the SEC.
So, what would happen if Shoop leaves Penn State for LSU? I am sure there is somebody out there thinking James Franklin should reach out to Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson and offer to give him the defensive coordinator job, which would be a long-deserved promotion depending on who you ask. And I am sure there is someone else out there thinking Tom Bradley could come back.
Not happening, but Shoop to LSU could open up that discussion. Franklin has been very loyal to his staff during his coaching career, so losing Shoop may not happen in the end for what amounts to a lateral move (although with a potential raise that would allow for a few extra value meals to be supersized on the recruiting trails). But, never say never.
