As many times as Chip Kelly denied that he was the Philadelphia Eagles general manager on the surface, everybody knew he was pulling the strings when it came to the 90-man roster. After seeing Kelly’s moves this offseason not pan out, from trading running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for Kiko Alonso and benching $40 million running back DeMarco Murray, team owner Jeffrey Lurie had enough.
On Tuesday night, ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio reported that Lurie was considering changes to the personnel structure for many weeks and one of the moves he was thinking about was taking personnel control away from Kelly.
When Lurie proposed that idea to Kelly in a recent meeting, Kelly was not a fan of it at all. That decision from Kelly ultimately sealed his fate as Lurie decided to part ways with him. Paolantonio also reported that the Eagles decided not to wait till after Week 17, because they wanted to get a jump start on contacting potential head coaching candidates.
It will be interesting to see how Lurie picks the personnel decision-makers going forward as Chip Kelly and Ed Marynowitz are now looking for new jobs. Kelly wanted it his way or the highway and it looks like Lurie told him to pack his bags.
