If you didn’t know, Dirk Nowitzki is a free agent but it was never no doubt that he was leaving the Dallas Mavericks. You might be asking yourself why it took Dirk so long to sign his new deal, well the Mavericks are also in the hunt for Carmelo Anthony.
Melo met with Mark Cuban and the Mavericks last night but nothing really came out of the meeting. Which leads to today as according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs agreed to a new three-year deal worth $30 million.

Dirk always likely to be first major free agent to decide. Sources say sides agreed today to three-year pact believed to be in $30M ballpark

With Dirk taking less money, it gives the Mavericks room to make moves in free agency. Moves such as trying to bring back Vince Carter, who they really want back, trying to sign Carmelo Anthony, or if that doesn’t work, taking a look at Houston Rockets forward Chandler Parsons, who has definitely outplayed his contract.
Dirk Nowitzki is getting up there in age and there is an urgency to win now. With him signing this contract it puts the ball in Mark Cuban’s court.
