After losing the franchise’s all time leading rusher in a trade with Buffalo, the city of Philadelphia is about to have its wounds healed ever so quickly. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray is expected to sign with his former division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. After Dallas offered a contract that was deemed “disrespectful” for a player that led the league in rushing last season, Murray felt it was best to weigh his options and explore what other teams had to offer.
Murray, who carried the load for the Cowboys, finished last season with 392 rushing attempts for 1,845 yards which was good enough for the league’s rushing title. He was the focal point of the Cowboys success last season. If you are an Eagles fan and are not excited about the brute force this guy is about to bring to the offense than you have to reevaluate yourself. I understand the guy may be fumble prone and have had his problems with injury. But he is young and is seasoned to be a tremendous running back in the league for a long time.
Also, I would not concern myself with Murray and the tread on his tires. He was handed the ball 392 times but that number won’t be nearly as high in Philadelphia. Chip Kelly runs a spread offense and his system, which is working for most part, will give Murray plenty of space to run the ball down the defense’s throat. Murray, to some is a top five running back and the Eagles were willing to pay him as such so.
You have to wonder if Murray took into consideration that he will get to play the Cowboys twice a year in to consideration with his contract with the Eagles. Reportedly, a five-year deal worth $42 million is a pretty penny and with $18 million guaranteed based off skill and injury. Yes, that means even if Murray falls to injury, he will still see $18 million.
Murray, once an enemy, now an enemy of the enemy, is getting paid like a top five running back and will have to produce such as one. He is paired with former Oklahoma Sooner and college roommate Sam Bradford, who Chip Kelly traded for earlier in the week. That move along with letting wide receiver Jeremy Maclin walk as well as trading LeSean McCoy have left the fanbase in utter confusion. The addition of Murray may put most of that confusion out the window. Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, Eagles versus Cowboys has been taken to a whole new level.
