After having a terrible 2015 season, the Philadelphia Eagles’ linebacker unit went through some huge changes this offseason. The team traded Kiko Alonso, released DeMeco Ryans, and signed Nigel Bradham in free agency.
With Mychal Kendricks and Jordan Hicks already in the fold, the Eagles’ linebacker unit should be better than last season under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. However, despite having Bradham, Hicks, and Kendricks, the Eagles could be adding former Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the two parties are in “heavy negotiations.”
This is not a surprise as the Eagles do not have a lot of depth at the linebacker position and Tulloch’s former head coach in Detroit was Schwartz. Under Schwartz, Tulloch had a successful three-year span with a total of 251 tackles.
2011 was Tulloch’s best season in Detroit as he had 84 tackles, seven pass deflections, three fumble recoveries, and three sacks.
However, in 2014, Tulloch only played in three games as he suffered a torn ACL celebrating a sack. This past season, Tulloch came back healthy and played in all 16 regular season games. He played 69.2 percent of the defensive snaps, while collecting 74 tackles, two fumble recoveries, a pass deflection, and an interception.
In July, the Lions released the 10-year veteran, despite him passing a physical. If the Eagles do get a deal done with Tulloch, he will provide the Eagles with much-needed depth behind second-year starter Jordan Hicks.
