With only two days till NFL Free Agency begins, the rumor mill is churning at an all-time high. The Philadelphia Eagles, who currently only have $17 million in cap space are looking to trade players with larger contracts on the roster. Earlier today, it was reported that the Dolphins are in trade talks with the Eagles, trying to acquire cornerback Byron Maxwell. That trade is nearly finalized as now it includes linebacker Kiko Alonso.
Maxwell and Alonso may not be the only players that the Eagles trade in the coming days. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Eagles have made it known that both running backs DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews are available for the “right price”.
The 2015 season was disappointing for Murray as he did not live up to the expectations of his five-year, $40 million contract he signed last offseason. Murray only carried the ball 193 times for 702 rushing yards and six touchdowns, struggling to find any type of consistency behind the Eagles’ makeshift offensive line. This upcoming season, Murray’s salary is $7 million with a cap hit of $8 million.
On the other hand, Mathews had a bounce back season despite missing three games. In 2015, Mathews rushed for 539 yards and six touchdowns. In Chip Kelly’s offense, he was more effective than Murray, who is a north-south runner. Now when it comes to Mathews’ contract, his base salary for this upcoming season is $3 million with a cap hit of $4 million.
If the Eagles move either Murray or Mathews, don’t expect a lot in return as both running backs have a lot of mileage on their tires. Plus, these days, the running back position is becoming devalued.
