The Mark Sanchez era will be continuing for two more seasons in Philadelphia. According to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports 1, the Eagles will be re-signing the backup quarterback giving him a two-year deal worth $9 million with $5.5 million guaranteed. Garafolo also adds that Sanchez’s deal could reach $16 million as it is incentive laden.
When first looking at Sanchez’s deal it seems as if it is pricey for a backup quarterback, which could mean the Eagles will trade current starter Nick Foles and Sanchez will be the backup to Marcus Mariota. But that is looking too far into the future as there are many moves to be done in free agency.
This past season with the Eagles, Sanchez did a solid job as the starter for Nick Foles, when he fell to injury on November 2 against the Houston Texans. In that game versus the Texans, Sanchez threw for 202 yards, completed 68.1 percent of his passes and finished with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
In his first game as a starter on Monday Night Football against the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles rolled to a 45-21 victory. Sanchez threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns and completed 54.0 percent of his passes. Overall in nine games, Sanchez finished with a 5-4 record, 2,418 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and an 88.4 quarterback rating.
It will be interesting to see what Sanchez’s role will be with the Eagles. Will it be a backup to either Foles or Mariota or a starter?
