The Philadelphia Eagles’ backfield remains to be one of the biggest question marks heading into the 2016 season. One player who will be looked upon to carry an increased load is running back Darren Sproles. Fortunately for the Eagles, the speedy back will remain an Eagle beyond the 2016 season.
The Philadelphia Eagles announced Friday morning that Sproles and the team agreed to a one-year contract extension through 2017. The deal is said to be worth $4.5 million.
Sproles was in the spotlight just a few months ago, missing voluntary workouts, and having his name thrown around in trade rumors. Despite all that, Sproles showed up at mandatory workouts, and head coach Doug Pederson ensured everyone that Sproles is not going anywhere.
In two seasons with the Eagles, the 33 year-old rushed for over 600 yards, and became one of the NFL’s most dangerous punt return men with over 900 return yards and four touchdowns.
With his new deal, Sproles looks to help the Eagles questionable backfield led by an injured Ryan Mathews, and remain a special teams gem for the Birds.
