Thus far this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have released tight end James Casey and offensive lineman Todd Herremans as cap casualties and could be faced with the same situation again with veteran outside linebacker Trent Cole.
The Eagles prefer not to release Cole, who has been a fan favorite among fans but he is making $11.6 million this upcoming season, which is second highest on the team. According to Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com, a person close to the situation has said the two sides are working on a new contract.
If the two sides can work out a new deal that would be great as Cole has been a stalwart on the Eagles defense for many years. Cole was drafted in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft and from day one has made an impact. Over his 10 year career with the birds, he has 85.5 sacks, 436 tackles and played in 155 games.
Many thought Cole’s time might be cut short when the Eagles made the switch on defense to the 3-4. Though the transition has been rough for the entire defense, Cole transitioned smoothly to the outside linebacker position. For the past two seasons as an outside linebacker, he has 14.5 sacks and 84 tackles.
But if the Eagles cannot reach a new deal with Cole, they will unlikely keep him as he will save them $8.4 million.
It will be interesting to see what the Eagles do with Cole as free agency begins eight days from now.
