The National Basketball Players Association plans to file a grievance against the Sacramento Kings early next week, reports Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.
Representatives of free agent Luc Mbah a Moute, who signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Kings on July 14 and failed his physical days later, have questioned the legitimacy of the team exam after the forward recently cleared physicals to play in an NBA exhibition in Africa.
According to the Kings, the franchise voided Mbah a Moute’s contract after team doctors found a shoulder injury, which is within their rights stated in the collective bargaining agreement.
This isn’t the first time Sacramento has been involved with disputed physicals. In August 2005, the New Jersey Nets rescinded a sign-and-trade deal for Shareef Abdur-Rahim following a failed physical (knee), only to have the Kings ink him to a lucrative free agent contract.
In December 2011, Sacramento voided free agent Chuck Hayes’ deal after a heart abnormality was discovered. When independent testing cleared any danger, the Kings signed Hayes and added a $1.1 million raise on his initial four-year, $21.3 million pact.
