The Sacramento Kings have agreed to terms with Dallas Mavericks employee Roland Beech, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein. Beech will reportedly serve as the Kings’ Vice President of Analytics.
Beech is a graduate of UC Berkeley and founded 82games.com, an advanced NBA stats forum. The Mavericks hired him as a consultant during the 2005-06 season, where he proceeded to prove his worth. Beech ascended to assistant coach, or “stats coach” by the time Dallas won the 2011 championship, and he most recently held the title of Vice President of Basketball Operations.
The Kings’ hiring of Beech quells speculation that the front office and Vice President of Basketball and Franchise Operations Vlade Divac planned to shun analytics. In late July, Sacramento cut ties with renowned statistician Dean Oliver, who was employed for 10 months and hired by previous general manager Pete D’Alessandro.
