Sacramento must be an attractive free agent destination. The Kings signed their third target in two days by agreeing to terms with Kosta Koufos, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein. Koufos’ four-year, $33 million contract has an early player termination option in 2018.
Koufos is a seven-year NBA veteran with the Utah Jazz, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies. The 23rd pick out of Ohio State in 2008 has career averages of 5.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.8 blocks, 0.7 turnovers and 15.3 minutes in 424 games (139 starts).
Aside from his rebounding and offensive skill set, what made Koufos particularly appealing to the Kings was his prior experience working for head coach George Karl. In Denver the big man logged 140 regular season games under Karl from 2011 to 2013. During the 2012-13 campaign when Karl won Coach of the Year, Koufos earned 81 starts and produced 8.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 1.3 blocks in 22.4 minutes a contest.
In Koufos the Kings have a 7-foot, 265-pound presence who can back up both frontcourt positions. The pivot joins wing Marco Belinelli and point guard Rajon Rondo as the newest members of the Sacramento franchise.
