The Lane Johnson suspension saga has come to a disappointing end. After hearing the right tackle’s appeal on Oct. 4, the NFL has decided to uphold Johnson’s 10-game ban.
Word of Johnson’s suspension had originally come on Aug. 9 after he tested positive for peptides, a substance on the NFL’s banned substance list. Unlike his first suspension in 2014, which he took full responsibility for, Johnson immediately claimed his innocence this time, stating that he unknowingly took the substance.
Further information revealed that Johnson took an amino acid which was indeed on the approved substance list, however the lack of FDA regulation of supplements allowed for the banned substance to be in the supplement without being listed as an ingredient.
Johnson argued that since the amino acid itself was on the approved list, his suspension was unjust. However, the NFLPA released statements claiming that players are responsible for any undetected ingredients, and stated that they have programs in place to test supplements for players.
Johnson’s absence will be a huge loss for the 3-1 Eagles who face a slew of tough defenses in the coming stretch of the season. The Eagles plan to start rookie tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai in Johnson’s place.
Johnson will be eligible to return on Dec. 19 following the Eagles’ match-up against the Baltimore Ravens.
