The Long Island Rail Road is saying it will provide two trains per event at the Islanders planned arena at Belmont Park and will look into expanding the stop into a full-time station.
The information was part of a synopsis of the project posted on the Empire State Development Corporation website, which is overseeing the project. The two trains would run from Jamacia station, according to Newsday.
State senator Todd Kaminsky told Newsday that the LIRR will also look into service from the east at the station as well.
[lawrence-related id=863758,862315]“Islander fans will be coming from east of the arena, it is hard to overstate the importance of having train service running from that direction,” Kaminsky told Newsday. “It is good to know that ESD and the MTA are studying this closely and I will work with them in Albany to help make it a reality.”
The news comes as the Empire State Development Corporation met in New York City on Thursday to authorize the release of the draft environmental impact statement for the proposed $1.2 Billion project.
The proposed development includes a 19, 000 seat arena for the Islanders, a hotel, retail, office and community space. Islanders ownership has said they plan to break ground on the project in May of next year and the arena should be open in 2021.
Last Friday, co-owner Jon Ledecky said he didn’t foresee any hiccups that would deviate the project from that timeline.
