According to a report by Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News, the Phillies and Padres have talked about a trade that would send south paw Cole Hamels to the Padres in exchange for a package centered around newly acquired outfielder Wil Myers.
The Padres rookie GM, AJ Preller, has already made some very bold transactions in his first winter in charge. He’s traded for outfielders Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and of course Myers. It isn’t too surprising that San Diego is using Myers as trade bait even just days after acquiring him. Preller acquired catcher Ryan Hanigan from the Rays in the Myers deal, for example, and promptly swapped him to the Red Sox for Wil Middlebrooks.
San Diego has a surplus of outfielders with Seth Smith, Wil Venable, Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin to name a few. In other words, they don’t necesarrily need Myers.
Hamels grew up in San Diego, so a trade to the Padres wouldn’t be a problem. In addition, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY, San Diego is one of nine teams he will approve a trade to without permission. Oh yeah, and his career 1.78 ERA at PETCO Park isn’t too shabby, either.
Hamels, the most coveted pitcher remaining on the trade market, has also drawn interest from the Cubs, Dodgers and Rangers.
