When the Wisconsin Badgers got the commitment of three-star quarterback Austin Kafentzis, many saw his highlight reel and eye-popping stats and saw the future of the Wisconsin program.
That future didn’t last long, as Evan Flood of Badger247 was first to report that Kafentzis will be leaving the program and not even stick around for his fist fall under head coach Paul Chryst.

It could be shocking to hear, considering the hype surrounding him under former head coach Gary Andersen. However, signs of a future buried on the depth chart were there from nearly the beginning with Chryst.
After taking a visit to Oregon State following Andersen’s departure, Chryst and Kafentzis talked and the QB chose to sign and enroll early at UW.
But, on the field Kafentzis went from curiosity to nearly non-existent in team drills as spring went along. It ended with a brief appearance in the annual spring game, going 3-3 for 53 yards passing.
It probably didn’t help that fellow early enrollee, Alex Hornibrook, was hand-picked by this coaching staff. No doubt it didn’t help that Hornibrook was outperforming Kafentzis all spring long as well.
According to Flood’s report, Chryst never saw Kafentzis as a quarterback, and that was clear after spring ball was completed.
Wisconsin also appears to have a loaded QB group for the future, with redshirt freshman D.J. Gillins making a big push for the backup job, Hornibrook fitting in nicely and three-star legacy recruit Kare’ Lyles coming on board in 2016. There’s also Bart Houston, who could be in line to start his final season at Camp Randall in 2016.
it isn’t known where Kafentzis will look to transfer to at this time.
