Report: Redskins have ‘very legit offer’ for Josh Norman

The Washington Redskins have reportedly put an aggressive offer on the table for free agent cornerback Josh Norman.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Redskins have provided Norman—an All-Pro defender in 2015—with what is being called a “very legit offer.”

Norman—who was made a free agent on Wednesday when the Carolina Panthers rescinded his franchise tag—has found a predictably strong market for his services, with eight teams or more interested in signing him to a deal. While general manager Dave Gettleman and the Panthers finally soured on Norman’s contract demands, a team with loads of cap space should be able to come up with the cash necessary to get a deal done.

The Redskins have just under $12 million left, while the San Francisco 49ers—who were considered an early front runner—have over $50 million.

If a bidding war breaks out, it seems likely the Redskins would lose—but teams can always get creative with the cap to fit in a major contract.

Washington could certainly use a player of Norman’s caliber at cornerback, where the team currently plans to start Bashaud Breeland and Chris Culliver, who is coming off a torn ACL. The Redskins finished 25th against the pass in 2015, with 30 touchdowns allowed and only 11 interceptions.

Norman should be in no hurry to sign, especially with so many teams reportedly interested. He’s eventually going to find a deal he likes, and probably sooner rather than later. Time will tell whether Washington’s “very legit offer” will be enough to sign the Pro Bowl cornerback.
