After winning the offensive rookie of the year for his successful 2012 campaign, it was all downhill for the Redskins-RGIII relationship. That sad tale officially came to an end this morning as ESPN reported that the Washington Redskins have officially released quarterback Robert Griffin III.
The release of Griffin comes to no surprise as the new league year is just two days away. By releasing Griffin, the Redskins save the $16.15 million he was set to make this coming season.
Throughout his career, Griffin has racked up 8,097 yards, and 40 touchdowns. His best season was his rookie season, where he threw for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns, while adding another seven scores on the ground.
Since that season, which Griffin played 15 out of 16 regular season games, he has not played a full season. A postseason ACL and LCL injury started an injury and inconsistency spiral that would damage his stay in Washington.
Now that Griffin is on the market, there are several teams that could be in the hunt to land the former Baylor star. Though he may not make nearly what he was set to earn this year, he will certainly have a chance to rekindle the magic many thought of him to have after his first year.
Earlier today, Griffin took to Twitter to thank the Redskins organization and fans for his four years with the franchise. Although the relationship soured rather quickly, he remains appreciative of the time spent in Washington.
