The Sacramento Kings have reportedly made another move to shake up their roster. As first reported by Yahoo! Sports, the Kings have acquired Rudy Gay. To get the veteran small forward, the Kings are planning to send Chuck Hayes, Patrick Patterson, Greivis Vasquez and John Salmons to the Toronto Raptors. The Kings are reportedly also receiving big man Aaron Gray and forward Quincy Acy as part of the deal.
The Raptors and Gay had become increasingly unhappy with each other, league sources said, and Gay’s contract was an obstacle to the franchise’s desire to begin the rebuilding process.
Gay is making $17.8 million this year, and holds a player option for $19.3 million for the 2014-15 season. The forward will almost assuredly exercise the option and take that salary next season.
The Kings plan to use Gay at the stretch-four position.
Through 18 games for the Raptors, Gay has averaged 19.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in 35.5 minutes per game.
The Kings will add an additional $2.8 million in salary this year by making the trade. The Raptors, meanwhile, will save approximately $12 million by dealing Gay, who makes about $19.3 million next season if he exercises his player option. Patterson and Vasquez’s contracts expire after this season while only $1 million of Salmons’ $7 million salary is guaranteed next season.
Gay, Acy and Gray have reportedly been held out for tonight’s Toronto Raptors’ game against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center. A trade call to complete the deal has apparently been scheduled for tomorrow.
