The Sacramento Kings and Detroit Pistons are apparently reopening trade discussions regarding veteran Josh Smith. According to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein, the Kings and Pistons have restarted trade talks involving the 28-year-old forward.
The Kings and Pistons first emerged in trade talks for Smith last month. The two teams had conversations initially about a deal that involved either Jason Terry’s or Derrick Williams’ expiring contract plus Jason Thompson in exchange for Smith. ESPN.com’s Marc Stein is now reporting that the two franchises are seeking a third team to help facilitate a potential trade.
It’s no secret that the Kings value athleticism and could use a shot-blocking big man to pair with DeMarcus Cousins. At 6-foot-9, 225 pounds, Smith would fill Sacramento’s need for shot-blocking. However, it could come at a price. Smith has had run-ins in the past with previous coaches, leading some to wonder whether his attitude would be a problem in the Kings’ locker room.
Smith is also owed approximately $40.5 million over the next three years. Smith also has a close relationship with Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo, who the Kings have allegedly coveted in the past. The 28-year-old former All-Star point guard will be a free agent next offseason.
