Caron Butler will sign a two-year, $3 million contract with the Sacramento Kings, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski and USA TODAY Sports’ Jeff Zillgitt. The second year is a player option.
Butler, 35, is a 13-year NBA veteran and two-time All-Star who won a championship while injured with Dallas in 2011. In 864 career appearances (731 starts) with the Heat, Lakers, Wizards, Mavericks, Clippers, Bucks, Thunder and Pistons, the small forward has averaged 14.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.8 turnovers in 20.8 minutes.
While Butler’s days as an explosive slasher are behind him, his shooting prowess remains an asset. The wing made 37.9 percent of his 3-pointers on 2.8 attempts per game in Detroit last season, and he is a 34.9 percent shooter from downtown as a pro. The Kings need all the long range help they can get after ranking 28th in 3-point makes this year.
At his advanced basketball age, the 10th pick from Connecticut in 2002 won’t be relied on heavily. Butler should bring a stable presence to the locker room in addition to his outside scoring.
With the 2014-15 Pistons, Butler produced 5.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.6 turnovers in 20.8 minutes over 78 games (21 starts). He was traded from Detroit to Milwaukee on June 11 and waived on June 30. Cowbell Kingdom will keep you updated as we find out more.
