Report: Sam Hinkie’s days could be numbered

This season for the Philadelphia 76ers has been one of the worst not only in league history but in the Sam Hinkie, ‘Trust The Process’ era. The Sixers are a league worse 9-65 and the product on the floor shows that.

The Sixers’ top draft picks haven’t fared well either this season. Nerlens Noel is dealing with nagging injuries, Jahlil Okafor is done for the season with a torn meniscus and Joel Embiid is still rehabbing. With that being said, Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie is on the hot seat.

According to Michael Kaskey-Blomain, a source within the Sixers’ organization, says that Hinkie’s “long-term future in Philadelphia may be in jeopardy.”

Blomain adds that while the source did not make clear what in jeopardy could mean, the lack of progression is a major concern.

This does not come as a surprise as the team brought on board Jerry Colangelo in December to be the chairman of basketball operations. At his introductory press conference, Colangelo said, “What I see here is there’s a lot that needs to be done.”

The first step was getting the Sixers an established point guard. Colangelo did that by acquiring Ish Smith from the New Orleans Pelicans. The next step was changing the culture, adding a veteran presence inside the locker. The Sixers did that when they brought on Elton Brand. All these moves, show that Colangelo and ownership want to move this rebuilding process along at a faster pace.

The Sixers’ ownership is really concerned about the team’s future and where they are going. Currently, they have a logjam in the frontcourt and it could get crowded with Dario Saric reportedly coming over this summer. Plus, they will possibly have multiple first round picks but those players must be impact players right away.

But who knows where the Sixers will pick in this summer’s draft as there are only five impact players. This summer will be interesting to see if anything happens to Hinkie and what the Sixers do player movement wise. The Sixers cannot afford another 60-loss season.
