Report: Sergey Karasev wants to be traded by the Nets

In fairly unsurprising news, 22-year-old guard/forward Sergey Karasev — who has played a total of six minutes this season and had his team option for the 2016-17 campaign declined a few weeks ago — reportedly wants to be traded away from the Nets, according to an interview done with his father, Vasily.

Karasev, who came over to Brooklyn in the trade with the Cavaliers and Celtics that brought Jarrett Jack to the Nets, played 33 games last year (16 starts) before missing the rest of the season with a torn meniscus. The lanky 6-8 swingman showed some flashes of promise in his first season with the Nets but ultimately was way too inconsistent with his shot and, after returning from injury, found himself stuck behind Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and even Wayne Ellington in Lionel Hollins’ rotation.

It would make sense to complete a deal for both sides, as Karasev is still ridiculously young and he’s clearly not a part of the Nets’ future plans. Also, with the team declining to exercise its option on his contract, he’s going to be a free agent after this season anyway, so shipping him off would net a possible second-round pick and save an admittedly small amount of money.

What’s more interesting is that, in the interview, Vasily Karasev said — per NetsDaily — that “the team is in total disarray,” which is a claim an upset parent would likely make but is one that is certainly within the realm of possibility for a 2-10 team. It’s hard to imagine that, after this outburst from his father along with other sources confirming his interest in a trade, Karasev’s time in Brooklyn is long-lasting at this point.
