Could the Philadelphia 76ers be looking to acquire a point guard?
On Wednesday evening, according Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, the Sixers are among several teams that have shown interest in acquiring Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Tyus Jones.
The Timberwolves, just like the Sixers, have their own logjam but at the point guard position. Minnesota has Kris Dunn, Ricky Rubio, John Lucas III, and Jones.
According Wojnarowski, the Timberwolves are more open to moving Jones rather Rubio in the short-term as Jones’ summer league performance helped improve his standing with the teams that are interested in him.
Last season, as a rookie, Jones averaged 4.2 points, 2.9 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game. Jones only played in 37 games with Minnesota because he also spent some time in the D-League with the Idaho Stampede.
In six games with the Stampede, Jones averaged 24.7 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in 35.2 minutes per game. He also shot 48.7 percent from the field and 42.6 percent from three-point range.
It does not come as a surprise that the Sixers are looking for a backup point guard as the current point guards on the roster are Jerryd Bayless, Sergio Rodriguez, T.J. McConnell, and Cat Barber.
Bayless has not played in the preseason due to a wrist injury, which could sideline him for the beginning of the regular season. Rodriguez is just making his return to the NBA but has the ability to score points, McConnell knows Brett Brown’s offense but is more of a facilitator, and Barber will most likely be in Delaware with 87ers.
With all those factors, if the Sixers do not have to give up a lot to grab the 20-year old Jones, why not? He is still young enough to mold into the type of point guard Brown wants and unlike in Minnesota he’ll get playing time.
