After being active the past few NBA trade deadlines, the general consensus around the league is that the Philadelphia 76ers will be standing pat and would have to be blown away to make a deal. On Wednesday night, it was reported that the Sixers are ‘gauging interest’ in Jahlil Okafor as earlier in the day, there was a report that the Heat were interested in the rookie.
With that being said, the Sixers could make one more final call to another team in the Southeast Division, the Atlanta Hawks. According to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, a source told him that they wouldn’t be surprised if the Sixers called the Hawks at the 11th-hour reminding them about their interest in point guards Jeff Teague and Dennis Schroder.
But to acquire either of the two young point guards, Pompey says that the Sixers would have to give up either Noel or Okafor.
Right now, the Sixers cannot afford to give up either big man because they do not know where Joel Embiid’s health is at regarding his foot, plus we are still in the process of seeing Okafor and Noel play together.
If the Sixers could acquire Teague or Schroder it would be an automatic upgrade to the point guard position, despite the solid play Ish Smith has given them. This season, Teague is averaging 15.1 points and 5.5 assists in 28.6 minutes per game. On the other hand, Schroder, who is Teague’s backup, is averaging 10.7 points and 4.5 assists in 20.7 minutes per game.
Before the season, Schroder made it clear that he wants to be a starting point guard in the NBA.
“My goal is to start as point guard. If this doesn’t happen, I will look for other opportunities.”
It will be interesting to see if the Hawks move Schroder and if the Sixers are involved as the NBA trade deadline quickly approaches.
