Report: Sixers have Isaiah Whitehead on their radar

.

This season, the production the Philadelphia 76ers received from the shooting guard position was average at best. Last offseason, the Sixers acquired shooting guard Nik Stauskas along with forwards Carl Landry and Jason Thompson from the Sacramento Kings for two international players, and a future second round pick.

Many thought Stauskas would bring a different element to the team’s offense, providing them with another outside shooter to compliment Robert Covington. That did not come to fruition as Stauskas struggled this season, only averaging 8.5 points in 24.8 minutes per game.

Overall, Stauksas’s game slighty improved from his rookie season as he shot 38.5-percent from the field and 32.6-percent from three-point range this season.

With that said, the Sixers could use some more firepower at the position, and they have their eye on a particular player out of the Big East conference. According to Jerry Carino of the Asbury Park Press, the Sixers have Seton Hall guard Isaiah Whitehead on their radar. Whitehead, the outstanding sophomore, is one of 63 players participating at the 2016 NBA Combine.

Whitehead needs to have a great performance at the combine to put himself on multiple NBA teams’ radar as right now, according to DraftExpress’ latest mock draft, they have him going undrafted. Jonathan Givony also has the New York native rated as the 65th best prospect in this year’s class.

Despite that ranking, Whitehead took his game to another level this past season as he was one of the main reasons why Seton Hall was able to win the Big East Tournament, and punch their ticket into the big dance. Whitehead averaged 18.2 points, 5.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 32.3 minutes per game. He also shot 36.5-percent from three-point range and 37.9-percent from the field.

Whitehead must become a better shooter to be a more polished NBA player, which is why he has not signed an agent yet. He has until May 25 to decide if he wants to stay in the draft or come back to Seton Hall for another season to develop his game.

Remember, the Sixers have two picks in the late first round (No. 24, No.26) and could use one of them on a player like Whitehead, if he shows that can be a NBA player. If Whitehead decides to come back, the Sixers could use either of those picks to address the shooting guard position, or pickup a point guard.
