Report: Spurs to sign Ike Diogu

According to Sports Illustrated’s Sam Amik, the San Antonio Spurs have signed journeyman Report: Spurs to sign Ike Dioguforward Ike Diogu to a one-year deal.

Diogu played with the Los Angeles Clippers last season and averaged 5.8 points, and 3.2 rebounds in 36 games for the Clippers.

Diogu at 6’9″, and 250 lbs. will help the Spurs interior and give the team the size they desperately need. Currently, the only big men on the roster are Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter. DeJuan Blair is undersized (though has been playing great so far this season) and Matt Bonner is more of a perimeter player. With Diogu, they Spurs will have a “banger” in the post.

This move also coincides with rookie Cory Joseph being sent to the Toros today which may mean the move was made to make room for Ike on the roster.

However, with Manu Ginobili out 4-6 weeks due to a broken finger suffered in last night’s loss to Minnesota, one will wonder if San Antonio will be looking at possible shooting guards to act as a stop-gap until Manu returns to the court.

Project Spurs’ Trevor Zickgraf weighed in on the signing of Diogu:

“I like this pick up, even if it just gives the Spurs some extra size. At 6’9″ he’s not huge, but big enough. I feel like he’s never had a coach give him a chance to succeed or that injuries have always screwed him up. I have no idea if the Spurs will give him a chance to succeed but with six games in the next eight nights I do think he’ll get a chance to play.”

What do you have to say Spurs fans? Think Diogu will help the Spurs or should the team have gone after another player to help in the paint?
