Michael Malone is adding another assistant to his bench. According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, the Sacramento Kings have come to an agreement with former Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin to join Malone’s staff.
Corbin spent the last four years as coach of the Jazz before the franchise decided not to offer him a new contract following the 2013-14 season. During his time with the Jazz, Corbin amassed a coaching record of 112-146 and made the playoffs two of those four years. He previously served as an assistant for former Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan and took over for Sloan after he surprisingly retired midway through the 2010-11 season.
The 51-year-old coach is no stranger to Sacramento. During his 15-year career as an NBA player, Corbin played for the Kings on two separate occasions (1995-96 and 1999-2000). For his career, the 6-foot-6 ex-King averaged 9.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
Corbin will serve as Malone’s lead assistant, a position once occupied by his father Brendan. The elder Malone resigned from his son’s staff before the start of last season after deciding he was unable to commit to the grind of a full 82-game schedule. He recently, however, decided to jump back into the coaching ranks by joining Stan Van Gundy’s staff with the Detroit Pistons.
Malone made it known after the season that he wanted to add another assistant to his coaching staff following the departure of his father . Corbin is joining a staff that already includes assistants Chris Jent, Micah Nori, Corliss Williamson, Dee Brown and Ryan Bowen.
