Vernon Davis is officially a journeyman.
Davis, a two-time Pro Bowler who in 2009 was tied with the likes of Larry Fitzgerald and Randy Moss atop the NFL with 13 touchdown catches, will play for his third team next season.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the tight end will sign a one-year contract with the Redskins.
Davis’ second Pro Bowl season came in 2013, when he caught 13 touchdown passes among his 52 receptions for a 49ers team that reached the NFC title game for the third straight year. He caught just 26 passes in 2014 and 38 last season. The first 18 of those receptions came with the 49ers and the other 20 came after he was traded to the Broncos after Week 8.
After catching seven passes in a 15-12 loss to Oakland in Week 14 and one pass the following week, Davis didn’t catch another pass the rest of the season. He wasn’t targeted in Week 16 or 17 and Peyton Manning threw to him just once in the playoffs.
It’s hard to see Davis having a bigger role with the Redskins. Jordan Reed tops the tight end depth chart and he led the team with 87 receptions last season.
Of course the 32-year-old Davis did get a Super Bowl ring in Denver, and after last years’s NFC wild-card exit it’s possible that Jay Gruden wants a veteran presence in the locker room who knows a little something about making deep runs in the playoffs.
