The Sacramento Kings are on the receiving end of another cold shoulder.
According to NBA.com’s David Aldridge, free agent Wesley Matthews has verbally agreed to join the Dallas Mavericks. Matthews’ decision comes less than a day after he visited Sacramento and was offered a four-year, $64 million deal, per ESPN’s Marc Stein. The veteran will earn less money in Dallas.
The rejection is a slap in the face for the Kings after clearing cap space to make room for bigger signings. On Wednesday, Sacramento traded Jason Thompson, Carl Landry, Nik Stauskas, a protected future first round pick and the rights to swap first round picks for another two years in exchange for undisclosed overseas prospects. The move was done to allow the Kings more spending room in the open market.
Instead, Sacramento’s lavish offers have gone unclaimed. Matthews’ decision came down to more than money, and the same could be said for Monta Ellis on Thursday. The Kings’ other main free agent target at off guard turned down a four-year, $48 contract with Sacramento to earn $4 million less with the Indiana Pacers (source: ESPN).
Fortunately for the Kings, there are still several worthwhile free agents available. They’ll host Rajon Rondo in town for a meeting on Friday morning.
