The Phoenix Suns are getting face-to-face time with Isaiah Thomas. According to multiple reports, the free agent point guard is visiting Arizona today and tomorrow.
If Thomas joins the Suns, he wouldn’t be coming to Phoenix as a starting point guard. Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports the 25-year-old Thomas is envisioned as a third guard behind Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe. The Sacramento Kings also view Thomas as best suited in a sixth-man role.
Aside from the Suns, Thomas has drawn interest from multiple teams around the league. SLAM’s Brett Weisband says Thomas told him yesterday that the 25-year-old guard has narrowed down his top three choices to the Suns, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs recently inked small forward Chandler Parsons to a three-year, estimated $45-million offer sheet that the Houston Rockets have the right to match.
The Suns have free agent matters to deal with themselves. Bledsoe is still available on the open market and, like Thomas, is a restricted free agent. That gives the Suns the right of first refusal to match any offer sheet that Bledsoe potentially signs with another team.
Free agency has been relatively slow since the start of the new league calendar. The league is currently awaiting decisions from superstar free agents like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, who have yet to declare publicly where they will play next season.
