Rex Ryan is always good for a quote, and it seems now that the bold, brash Bills coach is learning the art of subtlety.
Ryan took a veiled swipe at Mario Williams Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., saying that Williams has “everything he wants in Miami,” according to ESPN.com.
The Bills released Williams this offseason after the defensive end produced just five sacks in 2015. Williams blamed Ryan’s defensive scheme while his teammates complained that he was a disruptive presence in the locker room.
Williams posted double-digit sacks for three straight seasons, including 14.5 the year before Ryan arrived in 2014.
Ryan suggested that Williams will be happier with the Dolphins, who play a 4-3 defense. He also hinted that the Bills’ two games against the Dolphins might be “circled” on the calendar.
That makes six games circled on Ryan’s calendar. The games against the Patriots were circled as soon as he got the Jets job in 2009. The games against the Jets were circled when he got the Bills job last year. Now there’s another leg on the Rex Ryan Grudge Match Tour.
