The Angels are on a roll. A fun, enjoyable but ultimately meaningless roll. The bats stayed hot as the Angels got key contributions from different sources once again. This time it was Erick Aybar producing runs and making me forget what a terrible idea it is for him to be batting second. Even Peter Bourjos overcame his wrist problems enough to reach base three times.
The real story though wasn't the Angels winning big, it was Garrett Richards pitching well in a not so good way. Sure, Richards fanned six and only allowed two hits, but one of those hits was a homer and he issued seven walks in between all the rest of that. That is really only a positive in that he didn't get hit hard like he did when he faced the Rays last week. This was an improvement, but the seven walks is a real concern. Richards hadn't walked more than three batters in any of his previous starts. In fact, the most walks he had issued in an entire month was eight. So, yeah, for a big impressive win, it came a steep price.
Game Notes
– Andrew Romine had three hits. I… I don't even.
– Grant Green finally smacked his first big league homer. That is wonderful because he hadn't flashed much power thus far, but it is also great because it could convince Scioscia not to start Romine over him two games in a row.
– I can't help but notice how well Hank Conger is hitting now that he is getting the lion's share of playing time. It is almost like the two facts are related. Weird, right?
