Johnny Pesky died today at age 92. Red Sox Nation has lost its greatest ambassador.
I met Pesky in 2006 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway before the NASCAR race. He was seated at the table next to me eating breakfast with a group of his friends. I recognized him but did not want to interrupt his conversation. His friends had to leave and he was sitting there by himself so I decided to approach him. We talked for awhile and he was very nice and welcoming and he signed a note for my so that says, “From your pal, Johnny Pesky.” My son has had that note along with a picture of Pesky on his wall ever since. When my son went to Fenway for the first time last year, signing the Pesky pole meant so much more to him.
This is truly a sad day for generations of Red Sox fans.
