Not long ago, Ohio State began offering some new wide receivers in the 2012 class.

At first, it was a bit perplexing given the already committed players (Michael Thomas, Roger Lewis, Frank Epitropoulos) and the positive buzz surrounding Dwayne Stanford.

Fast forward to now and it isn’t hard to see that the writing was on the wall for Stanford and the coaching staff was looking for a player to replace him.

One of those players that received a recent offer was Florida wide receiver Ricquan Southward.

Almost as soon as the offer went out, Southward committed to the Miami Hurricanes and the story was seemingly over for the Buckeyes.

In case you didn’t read the title of the article, that all changed this evening when Ricquan Southward verbally committed to the Buckeyes and became the 16th member of the 2012 recruiting class.

After the performance that Braxton Miller put together up north, and with the forest fire amount of smoke surrounding Urban Meyer as the Buckeyes next head coach, it is no surprise that Southward took the opportunity to jump on board the express train to awesome town by becoming a Buckeye.

Southward combines great size (6’2″ 190 lbs.) with the elite athleticism you’d expect from an elite Florida skill player. On top of that, he runs downhill with an attitude once the ball is in his hands, which is refreshing to see in a WR.

Shout out to coach Drayton for leading the way on this recruitment, and even bigger shout out to the newest member of the Buckeye family, Ricquan Southward.

Highlights after the jump.
