It seems like it shouldn’t have taken this long, right?
Last September, New York Yankees fan Dan Salogub had an idea…name the stretch of street outside Yankee Stadium after the then-retiring Mariano Rivera. You see, the park sits on the corner of East 161st Street and River Avenue, so a change would be super easy. A couple of months later, the New York City Council voted to rename the street after the all-time saves leader.
And on Monday…it was official.

“This is way, way, way beyond baseball, definitely. It has nothing to do with baseball. I think it’s how you treat people, how you respect others and you receive the same love and respect back,” Rivera told WCBS 880′s Peter Haskell. “Amazing. I mean, I never thought something like this would happen.”
On hand for Monday’s celebration just outside Yankee Stadium, some local elected officials, community organizers, representatives from Rivera’s foundation and, of course, Yankees fans. Unfortunately, none of the current Yankees were there to cheer on their former teammate. They were in Los Angeles taking on the Angels.
Now begs the question…what stretch of road is going to be renamed “Jeter Way”? Stay tuned.
