Rob Ryan owns Cam Newton

Cam Newton has been nothing short of awful against the Rob Ryan defense for three straight games now. You might bring up the 2 minute drive in Carolina last year that helped the Panthers narrowly steal the NFC South, but even with that drive Newton’s stats against Rob Ryan’s unit has been really unforgiving.

Consider these numbers:

12/8/13 – Panthers @ Saints – 22 for 34, 160 yards, 1 touchdown 0 interceptions. He was sacked 5 times and rushed for 48 yards.

12/22/13 – Saints @ Panthers – 13 for 22, 181 yards, 1 touchdown 1 interception. He was sacked 4 times and rushed for 6 yards. It’s also worth noting that 65 of those 181 passing yards, and his lone passing touchdown, came on the final drive.

10/30/14 – Saints @ Panthers – 10 for 28, 151 yards, 0 touchdowns 1 interception. He was sacked 4 times and rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown. He also lost a fumble.

Newton is 45 for 84 in three games against Rob Ryan, or 53.6%. His career completion % is 59.4%. He’s almost 6 points below average against Rob Ryan.

Newton has averaged 164 yards passing per game against Rob Ryan. His career passing yards per game is 235.3. He’s throwing for over 71 yards less per game against Rob Ryan.

Newton has averaged 32.3 yards rushing per game against Rob Ryan. He’s average 40.2 yards rushing per game in his career. He’s rushing for 8 yards less per game against Rob Ryan

Newton has been sacked 13 times in 3 games by Rob Ryan’s defense. For his career, he averages getting sacked 2.54 times per game. The Saints are sacking him almost 2 times more per game than average with Rob Ryan.

Newton has thrown for 2 touchdowns and had 3 turnovers in 3 games. Nothing short of totally unimpressive. Somehow the Saints are 2-1 in those three games, thanks in part to a driving rain storm that limited the Saints offense (and Newton too, admittedly) and also thanks to the one drive in 3 games where Newton actually made plays against this defense.

Let’s hope Rob Ryan can tap into whatever clear edge he has over Cam Newton again on Sunday. The numbers are insanely impressive so far.
