Robin Williams Explains Golf – A Tribute

I had every intention of writing a sports column Monday evening. I went online to do some research on my subject when I clicked on the CNN website and saw the headline. Robin Williams Dead. He was 63 years old. Too young and too soon to be taken away. My sports column can wait a day or two. I want to pay a small tribute to the man who influenced film and comedy for the past 40+ years.

Next to watching sports I love watching movies and Robin William left no shortage of influences in my life. I remember wishing for any of my board games to come alive like Jumanji, except for Monopoly, that would be a nightmare and a very boring one at that. As a student I wished for a teacher half as influential as John Keating in Dead Poets Society. If I had to tell you what I think heaven is really like, I could do a lot worse than what is depicted in What Dream May Come. My daughter will always know him as the voice of the genie in Aladdin. There is the iconic Mrs. Doubtfire as well as the role that won him an Academy Award in Good Will Hunting. He could do comedy just as well as drama;I loved him in Insomnia just as much as I did in Good Morning, Vietnam. There is and will always be Mork. And so it goes on … and I didn’t even mention The Fisher King yet or One Hour Photo. As I stared at that headline, I was reminded of all those roles and then some. Robin Williams gave us an amazing run of memories and moments that we will cherish for as long as film, television and comedy exist.

In tribute to Robin Williams I want to share this clip. It is perhaps the best explanation of golf that ever was. (Caution: NSFW)

Rest in peace Robin Williams. You will be missed but I’ll see you in the movies.
