Earlier today, reports came out that Rolando McClain was present at a crime scene in which there were shots fired in Decatur, Alabama. Now further details have come out that the shooter was indeed Rolando McClain and he has been arrested and faces a number of charges.
The incident occured around 10:20pm on Wednesday night. The charges he is facing are third degree assault, menacing, reckless endangerment, and discharging a firearm in city limits. All of these charges are misdemeanors in the state of Alabama.
Allegedly a friend of McClain started the fight (the friend was also arrested for assault), which ended with Rolando holding a gun to the head of the alleged victim. The victim then pleaded for his life, and McClain fired a shot past his ear.
McClain was given permission by the Raiders to be in Alabama to attend his grandfather’s funeral. The shooting took place outside the house of a friend of McClain’s.
Here is the statement released by the Decatur Police:
“Rolando McClain has been arrested by the Decatur Police Department in connection with an assault which occurred late Wednesday night. The victim in the assault reported that he had been at a residence on Skyview St. SW in Decatur when he got into a fight with another individual, identified as Jerradius Willingham. During the fight, the victim sustained injuries to his head and face. He was bleeding from the nose and mouth when speaking to the responding officers. The victim told officers that following the fight, he crawled to his car. He said that when he reached his car, Rolando McClain produced a pistol and aimed it at him. He said that while he was still on the ground, McClain walked over to him and put the gun to his head. The victim reported that he begged McClain not to shoot him and that McClain took the gun away from his head, held it next to his ear and fired it. Even though the initial report was of “shots” fired, investigators believe this was the only gunshot fired.
“For most misdemeanor offenses, officers can only make an arrest if the offense occurred in their presence. For this reason, officers did not charge McClain or Willingham at the scene. The officers filed a report and informed the victim that he would be contacted by investigators the following morning. After filing a report with the officers, the victim drove himself to the hospital.
“Earlier today, investigators met with the victim and assisted him in obtaining personal warrants for McClain and Willingham. At this time, Rolando McClain has been charged with Assault in the Third Degree, Menacing, Reckless Endangerment, and Discharging a Firearm Inside the City Limits. He is currently being held in the Decatur Jail until his bond of $2,000.00 is paid. Jerradius Willingham has been charged with one count of Assault in the Third Degree and has been released on $500.00 bond.”
Earlier this year, McClain was in an incident in which his SUV had shots fired at it. At the time it seemed McClain could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. This incident suggests that the previous incident may have had much more to do with McClain than was initially thought.
The Raiders will likely be without their middle linebacker for a few games at least. These charges may be misdemeanors in Alabama but the NFL looks at them far more seriously. With the Raiders in the playoff hunt, the loss of McClain could really hurt their already shaky defense.
