Roman Catholic wins State Championship

Philadelphia’s own Roman Catholic won the PIAA AAAA boy’s basketball championship last night with a 73-62 win over Allderdice (Pittsburgh).

The Cahillites were led by a trio of Penn State signees Lamar Stevens, Nazeer Bostick, and Tony Carr. Stevens totaled 27 points and 7 seven rebounds, while putting on a show with four highlight reel dunks. Bostick had 15 points while Carr added 13 with 8 rebounds.

Allderdice was led by James Jackson, who had 21 points  and Ramon Creighton who added 19.

The Allderdice Dragons got out to a quick 10-0 lead as Roman Catholic did not score until close to the two minute mark in the first quarter. It didn’t take long for the Cahillites to overcome the early deficit as an 11-0 run in the second quarter helped them take a  33-30 lead into the half.

Allderdice was able to bring the game within a point, but another run by Roman Catholic, this time 12-2 kept the game out of reach for good.

Allderdice was plagued by foul trouble as they doubled up Roman Catholic in the foul department 22-11. This resulted in Roman attempting 32 free throws, making 24, compared to Allderdice shooting only 8 and only making 4.

Roman was also dominant on the boards, out rebounding their counter part 38-25 for the contest.

Roman Catholic, winners of district 12, finished the season 29-4 and handed Allderdice only their second loss of the season. This is the Cahillites second straight state championship.

The next stop for Stevens, Carr, and Bostick will be Happy Valley as they will attempt to help coach Chambers resurrect the Penn State program.
