Ron Springs, father of Washington Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs and former Dallas Cowboys great, is hospitalized and in a coma in Dallas according to a story appearing on Redskins.com. Shawn Springs has flown to Dallas to be with his father. It is uncertain how long he will be away. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs called the situation “very serious.” The elder Springs is struggling with several health issues. He is afflicted with Diabetes. In March, he received a transplanted kidney donated by friend and former Cowboys team mate Everson Walls. Ron Springs played college ball with Woody Hayes’ Ohio State Buckeyes from 1976-78, then spent six season as a running back with the Cowboys. He spent his last two NFL seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although a thorn in the Redskins’ side during his Cowboys days, Springs moved to suburban Washington to raise his family. Shawn Springs attended Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, Maryland.
